Event at USP presented an innovative business model to entrepreneurs

Experts explained the benefits of Crowdsourcing. The collaborative work developed by companies to put forth new gains.

Crowdsourcing is a business model that allows thousands of people to have the opportunity to contribute spontaneously to the creation and resolution of tasks. Therefore, using it allows entrepreneurs to enjoy creative forms to leverage their businesses at low costs.

With a little more than a decade of existence since the term was coined, crowdsourcing is one of the innovative business models that have drawn companies’ and startups’ attention in Brazil. However, the model is still little explored by Brazilian entrepreneurs, and with the purpose of disseminating it, the Society and Technology Study Center (CEST) held on April 27, at 9 a.m., a seminar about the subject at Escola Politécnica da Universidade de São Paulo.

The event brought experts that created their own companies based on this model so that they could share their experiences and provide guidance to entrepreneurs and students of several areas in order to inspire them to promote new gains in a creative manner.

According to Eduardo Bertassi, researcher of the subject and CEST’s collaborator, the model is still little used in Brazil, and that is the reason why there are still business opportunities to be explored. “For the entrepreneur, it is important to get familiar with crowdsourcing to show that there are other ways of undertaking business, considering not only the benefits companies can obtain together with their clients, but what their clients can obtain when choosing companies that incorporate this kind of business model”, said Bertassi.

It was shown to the audience technical, juridical, and organizational difficulties related to crowdsourcing, and the opportunities related to the development of new businesses or even academic research. Moreover, it was shown practical cases concerning the application of this model which ended up providing concrete benefits to companies and society.

Among the speakers, the event was attended by Steven N. Rader, deputy manager from NASA’s Center of Excellence for Collaborative Innovation (CoECI). He is responsible for disseminating crowdsourcing approaches on creating innovative solutions for the company and the Government of the USA. “Mr. Rader will demonstrate that crowdsourcing can be employed even to help men reach Mars” stated Bertassi.
